Story 5

Response to the King’s Cross Bombings 7 July 2005

Background

On the morning of July 7, 2005, I was filled with excitement as London had just been awarded the opportunity to host the 2012 Olympics. Drawing on my experience from the Atlanta Games in 1996. I saw a future opportunity to become a member of the Olympic security programme. However, whilst on my way to work at New Scotland Yard, the train I was travelling on was suddenly evacuated at Kings Cross station.

Scene Management

As I stood by the exit, I saw frightened individuals emerging from the station, covered in soot. Two people walked out visibly injured, clutching their chest(s) and calve(s). Realising that something critical had occurred, I put on my police badge and went to their aid. I established a casualty point away from the underground exit. Where the paramedics were able to attend to casualties.

Reflections

Many off-duty paramedics, police officers and firefighters instinctively joined in to support the emergency services and I am proud of everyone who participated that day. Without hesitation, we all stepped into our roles, and I felt honoured to be part of a dedicated team of responders addressing the public’s needs during this crisis.  I later received a commendation from the Police Commissioner late, reflecting the honour of working alongside such dedicated individuals.
