Story 1

Security Management at the Olympic Games

Background

During the 1996 European Football Championships at New Scotland Yard. I managed the Intelligence Unit which led to my appointment as the Joint Commandant of Security for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Georgia Soccer Stadium. My remit was to lead an International Voluntary Team working with the US military reserves, Police and community stewards for the safety and security of the stadiums 80,000 spectators. The success of this position later led to my appointment of Venue Security Manager for the International Broadcasting Centre, overseeing 200 volunteers and G4S staff to ensure the safety of 22,000 journalists at the London 2012 Olympics.

Security Strategies

High-profile sporting events require a careful balance between maintaining visible security and preserving the excitement of the event. Drawing on my extensive experience from the European 1996 Football Championships, I was well equipped to address these challenges.

The security planning for the 2012 Olympics was notably more structured, influenced by the September 11, 2001 New York terrorist attack, and the July 7, 2005 London bombings. For the London Games, I led a diverse security team focused on creating a safe environment for spectators, journalists, and broadcasters alike.

Reflections

Managing security at such large scale events necessitated extensive planning and coordination among multiple agencies. The collaboration between international broadcasters, producers, security personnel, and event staff was crucial for ensuring the safety of spectators while maintaining the integrity of the events. Among my most memorable experiences were encounters with the Royal Princes, A-list celebrities, including, David Beckham and had the honour of personally escorting the remarkable Roger Federer during the London 2012 Olympics. I also had the privilege of witnessing Muhammad Ali light the torch and providing personal protection for President Samaranch at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics Georgia Stadium.
